Pyrofora is a mechanical, digitally-controlled fire machine. It consists of six individually activated gas burners in counter-rotation on a rod system. An electric ignitor approaches the two central burners, one or both of which are lit at the onset of each cycle. A foot switch initiates various pre-programmed sequences.
I was interested in the dynamic images and choreographies that result from the individual approach to the flames, their burn rate and direction. The rushing sound from the burners, especially when they move sideways at high speed, and the often rhythmic rattle of the nineteen gas valves underscore the visual effects
acoustically. |
